Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain said Wednesday he’s "feeling good" just days after starting treatment for brain cancer and vowed to continue working and return to the Senate in September.

The Arizona Republican sounded an upbeat note in an interview on the Mike Broomhead Show on Phoenix talk radio station KFYI, his first since he began treatment Monday.

"It’s a tough challenge, of course, but [I’m] getting the best care you can possibly have. I’m eating well and feeling fine, getting plenty of exercise," McCain said.

McCain’s office announced last week he would undergo a regimen of radiation and chemotherapy, missing the two weeks this month that the Senate plans to be in session. But McCain reiterated today he continues to work during treatment and he’ll "be ready to go back to work in September."

"I’m doing the things we do during the recess — having meetings, appointments. We’ll be traveling around .. .the state," he said. "Look, the best thing .. .whenever you’re faced with a challenge like this is stay busy."

"I must say … thank you for all the cards and letters and calls," he said, joking, "It’s been very deeply moving to me, even those who have said, ‘I hope you die, but you’re still a good guy.’"

The Senate is expected to debate the annual National Defense Authorization Act (S. 1519 (115)) managed by McCain, when it returns from its summer break after Labor Day.

Leaders from both parties attempted to quickly pass the measure last week before McCain left Washington to start treatment, but the proposal was blocked.
